For readers who need AI detection without leaving Word, the third-party market is surprisingly small, and only a few tools are documented to perform AI detection inside Word itself. The strongest verified options are GPTZero, AI Detector Pro, Paperpal, and Grammarly. GPTZero and AI Detector Pro are true Microsoft Marketplace Word add-ins. Paperpal is also a Word add-in, although Microsoft describes its AI detector specifically as one-click access to Paperpal's online detector. Grammarly takes a different route: its current AI detector works in Word through Grammarly's Windows and Mac desktop integration rather than through the older Microsoft Office add-in.
- Best dedicated in-Word detector: GPTZero, because its Marketplace listing explicitly supports selecting Word text and analyzing it inside Word, and the vendor publishes comparatively detailed detection methodology and benchmarking.

- Most important caveat: none of these tools can prove authorship. Grammarly explicitly says detection results should not be treated as objective truth, GPTZero says its classifier should support further inquiry rather than punishment, and AI Detector Pro disclaims any guarantee of accuracy.

What Microsoft Word does and does not detect
The terminology is easy to muddle because Word now contains a substantial amount of AI. Microsoft's official Word AI documentation identifies its generative AI experience as Copilot in Word. Copilot can draft and transform text, improve flow, change formatting, summarize documents, and help users understand material. Nothing in Microsoft's description presents Copilot as a classifier for determining whether existing prose was generated by another AI model.
Microsoft Editor is also AI-powered, but its role is proofreading and writing assistance. Its documented functions include spelling and grammar correction plus Microsoft 365 refinements such as clarity, conciseness, formality, and vocabulary suggestions. It does not report an "AI probability" or identify passages as generated by an LLM.
The other feature that is commonly confused with an AI detector is Word's Similarity checker. Microsoft says this feature compares a document with online sources and helps users identify matching material and add citations. It applies to Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac. That is a source-similarity and plagiarism-oriented workflow, not an AI-authorship classifier.

Microsoft itself publishes educational material explaining how AI detector tools look for machine-like patterns. That page discusses AI detectors as a category of tools rather than identifying such a detector as part of Word, which is consistent with the product documentation above.
One additional source of confusion is the Microsoft Store. It contains applications with names such as "AI Detector," but a Microsoft Store listing is not the same thing as a feature built by Microsoft into Word. The distinction matters when evaluating security, support, licensing, and data handling.

Which AI detectors actually integrate with Word
GPTZero
GPTZero has one of the clearest Word integrations. Its Microsoft Marketplace listing says the add-in detects AI-generated text directly inside Word: users highlight text and run an analysis without first exporting the document. Microsoft's listing says the add-in can read and make changes to the document and can send data over the Internet. GPTZero's own Word extension page instructs users to install it from Word's Get Add-ins interface.
GPTZero says its detector uses deep-learning models and a sentence-by-sentence classifier that estimates whether text was produced by AI, producing both granular and document-level results. Its FAQ describes classification at document, sentence, and word level, based on a large corpus of human and AI-generated text.
Accuracy claims: GPTZero currently advertises about 99% accuracy for human-versus-AI classification, a false-positive rate under 1%, and 96.5% accuracy on mixed human/AI documents. These are vendor-reported figures and should not be interpreted as guaranteed performance on every document, language, model, or writing style. GPTZero itself says no detector is 100% accurate and that performance is stronger on longer texts and English prose.
Pricing: GPTZero currently promotes a free plan with 10,000 words per month and paid plans beginning around $12.99 per month. Exact tiers, billing periods, institutional packages, and promotional pricing can change, so the current GPTZero site should be checked before purchase.
Word platform support: the Word add-in is currently published in Microsoft Marketplace, but GPTZero's public Word documentation does not provide a precise supported-version matrix for Windows, macOS, and Word Online. Those details are therefore unspecified. This is a notable difference from Paperpal, which does publish a platform matrix.
AI Detector Pro
AI Detector Pro is another verified Microsoft Marketplace Word add-in. Microsoft lists the publisher as Westbourne International LLC, while AI Detector Pro's current site identifies the service as a product of AI Detector Pro LLC. Its add-in can scan either a full document, subject to length limits, or selected sections, highlight passages that trigger AI-detection signals, and provide rewriting suggestions.
The vendor says its detector identifies AI-generated material from historical patterns associated with GPT and related models. Unlike GPTZero, AI Detector Pro does not currently publish a simple, quantified overall accuracy percentage in its principal product documentation. Its terms explicitly say that it makes no warranty about detection accuracy and that no system can determine AI origin with 100% certainty.
Pricing: its current pricing page offers a free level with three AI scans per month. The Basic tier has been listed at a $27.98 monthly price, discounted to $13.99 with a 50% promo code, and includes 103 scans per month. An Unlimited tier is also offered. Because promotional pricing changes frequently, the current Unlimited price is best confirmed on the pricing page rather than assumed from older figures. Word and Google Docs plugins are included in the plan descriptions.
Word platform support: Microsoft confirms that this is an Office add-in, but the vendor does not publish a clear Windows/Mac/Word Online version matrix in the current Word documentation. Exact supported Word builds on each platform are therefore unspecified.

Paperpal
Paperpal, from academic-technology company Cactus Communications, has a broader academic-writing suite packaged as a Microsoft Word add-in. Its Microsoft Marketplace listing advertises grammar and writing assistance plus "one-click access" to an online plagiarism checker, AI detector, and journal pre-submission checks. That wording is important: the AI detector is integrated into the Word workflow, but Microsoft describes the check itself as an online detector rather than a completely local or purely task-pane analysis.
Paperpal's AI detector documentation says its model is trained on more than 100,000 human and AI scholarly samples, including material from ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The system reports document-level and sentence-level indicators and uses multiple cross-checking models. Paperpal claims that this approach reduces false positives by more than 40% and provides more than 95% sensitivity to human edits. Those are specific vendor claims, not a published overall accuracy percentage.
Paperpal is unusually clear about Word compatibility. Its support matrix lists Word 2019 or later on Windows and Mac, Microsoft 365 Word on Windows and Mac, and Microsoft 365 Word on the web. It warns that Word 2016/2019 volume-license installations can sometimes be incompatible and recommends the web version or a newer Office release when that occurs.
Pricing: the Word add-in can be used with a free Paperpal account. Paperpal's AI Detector launch documentation says the free detector provides five daily scans of up to 1,200 words and that a Prime subscription removes the scan-count limit and raises the per-scan document limit to 10,000 words. Paperpal's current pricing material has advertised Prime at approximately $12 per month when billed annually, or $144 per year. Pricing and quotas can change, so the current pricing page remains the authoritative purchase reference.

Grammarly
Grammarly is the outlier because its current AI detection is not best understood as a conventional Microsoft Marketplace add-in. Grammarly's AI Detector guide says paid users on supported plans can access AI detection inside Microsoft Word through the Grammarly for Windows and Grammarly for Mac desktop clients. Users open the Grammarly interface in Word and enter the plagiarism/AI checking workflow.
This distinction has become more important in 2026. Grammarly is retiring the old Grammarly for Microsoft Office add-in, saying it will no longer receive security, feature, or technical-support updates, while current Word functionality is delivered through its newer desktop experience. Some of Grammarly's newest help content also uses the Superhuman Go branding following Grammarly's integration into the Superhuman product family, so naming can differ between support pages during the transition.

Word platform support: current support documentation confirms AI detection within Microsoft Word using Grammarly's Windows and Mac desktop clients. Grammarly's Windows integration supports Microsoft Office 2016 or later and Microsoft 365 installations meeting its requirements; the desktop app currently requires Windows 10 build 1903 or later, while the Mac client requires macOS 11 or later. Grammarly generally supports Word Online through its desktop application, but the AI Detector guide does not explicitly state that the detector entry point itself is available in Word Online. Popular tools that I did not count as Word AI-detector integrations
QuillBot is a good example of why the distinction matters. QuillBot has both a Word add-in and a web-based AI detector, but its Word documentation says the add-in currently provides the Paraphraser and Grammar Checker. Its AI Detector is a separate product. Because the vendor does not currently document AI detection as a feature of the Word add-in, QuillBot is not included in the main list.
Copyleaks can analyze Microsoft Word files and offers browser and other integrations, but I did not find a current official Microsoft Word Office add-in for its AI detector in the vendor's present integration documentation. Uploading a .docx file to a website is useful, but it is not the same thing as having an AI detector integrated into Word.

The accuracy column deserves special attention. These figures are not directly comparable because vendors can use different datasets, definitions of accuracy, proportions of human and AI samples, model generations, languages, document lengths, and thresholds. GPTZero's 99% claim, for example, does not mean that any particular student essay has a 99% chance of being correctly classified. The vendors themselves repeatedly caution against treating a detector score as proof.
How to install and set up each option
Microsoft's current Office add-in guidance uses File > Get Add-ins or Home > Add-ins, followed by More Add-ins when necessary. Office add-ins declare document-access permissions in their manifests, and Microsoft notes that read/write document permission is required when an add-in uses application-specific APIs to interact with document content.

Permissions: Grammarly is a desktop application rather than an Office add-in manifest, so its permission model differs from GPTZero, AI Detector Pro, and Paperpal. Troubleshooting: restart the computer first if Grammarly stops appearing in Word. On Windows, confirm you are running a supported Word/Office version. The biggest conceptual limitation is that an AI detector is not a provenance system. It looks at characteristics of the final text and estimates whether those characteristics resemble patterns learned from AI-generated material. It generally does not have direct evidence that ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Gemini, or another model actually produced the text. Grammarly states particularly clearly that no detector can reliably and conclusively determine whether AI was used, while GPTZero describes its output as a reason to begin further inquiry rather than a basis for punishment.
This distinction becomes especially important with edited, translated, highly formal, technical, second-language, or mixed human/AI writing. A polished human document can statistically resemble model output, while heavily revised AI text can cease to resemble the patterns on which a detector was trained. Even vendors acknowledge that results can vary by text length, language, model, and amount of human editing.
- GPTZero: Microsoft says the Word add-in can read/change the document and send information over the Internet. GPTZero's FAQ says API-submitted documents are not stored, while inputs submitted through its dashboard are stored and used in aggregate to improve the service. The FAQ does not clearly map either rule to the Word add-in, so Word-specific retention is unspecified. Sensitive-document users should not assume that the API's no-storage rule automatically applies to the Word plugin.
- AI Detector Pro: Microsoft's listing gives it read/write document access and Internet-transfer capability. Its privacy policy says it processes user text, uses some third-party AI models for core functionality, and may need to share text with those model providers.
