Can Winston AI Detect Gemini? - The Hard Truth!

Can Winston AI Detect Gemini? - The Hard Truth!

As we all know it Winston AI is a well-known AI detector used by people who want to figure out if a piece of text has been written by an AI. However, can it detect Gemini? The short answer is YES. The longer answer is that the devil lies in the details. Keep reading to know more about it.

Why Winston AI can detect Gemini text?

The simple answer is that Gemini (including gemini-2.5-flash and gemini-2.5-pro) are not made with bypassing Winston AI in mind. You can see this on their website as well. They never advertise dodging Winston or any other AI detector as a feature. Hence, if it is not made to accomplish this particular task it won't be able to do it consistently.

I tested Winston AI on 105 different Gemini outputs (a mix of gemini-2.5-flash & gemini-2.5-pro). Winston AI flagged 104 out of 105 items correctly as AI-generated. That is roughly 99.05% detection accuracy, which is extremely impressive. You can probably figure out that if you want to rely on Gemini purely, it might not be a wise choice if your teacher or manager is using Winston to check your work.

Is there any difference between gemini-2.5-flash and gemini-2.5-pro?

Yes, ironically gemini-2.5-flash texts were always flagged correctly (100% detection rate). Meanwhile, gemini-2.5-pro had one miss – basically Winston AI tagged one gemini-2.5-pro text as if it was human, which is a minor slip (about 98% detection). So, if you’re relying on gemini-2.5-pro, you might get lucky once in a while but it is not something that you can depend on.

My personal experience

I was personally curious whether Winston AI might fail more often, so I tried texts of varied lengths and complexity. Winston AI’s “human-likeness” scores for Gemini’s content always ended up very low – generally below 2%. And that is well below typical thresholds used by many institutions to label content as “human.” So, even if you ignore Winston AI’s explicit “AI/Human” label and rely purely on score thresholds, it will still put Gemini output clearly into the AI bucket.

Now, we can’t say anything about false positives because we never included any actual human text in our test sample. There is no telling how Winston AI might treat real human essays or articles with different writing styles. Remember that models and detectors co-evolve over time. So, Winston AI might get more or less strict with further updates, and Gemini might also get sneaky and try to bypass it in the future. We’ll see and update you if that happens.

The Reliability Verdict

For pure detection of Gemini, Winston AI is highly dependable in this sample. Just one false-negative out of 105 probably won’t affect your content moderation or your originality checks, unless you absolutely need a 100% foolproof system.

Another thing to note is that we also tested on the false-positive rate and the overall accuracy of Winston AI, you can read this blog for more information. Still, if you want a rock-solid stance (like if you are a teacher or a content editor), you can just keep Winston’s default or more conservative threshold. That means if it suspects your text is AI, it will label it so. It might rarely produce misses, but that’s how these detectors work.

If you need a more nuanced approach, you can try pairing Winston AI with other signals like style heuristics, metadata logs, or usage analytics. This usually helps weed out rare misses or edge cases that Winston AI might not catch on its own.

The Bottom Line

Winston AI is super effective at detecting Gemini text. If you plan to use Gemini for important research essays or blog posts that absolutely must pass an AI detection test, you probably want to consider something else or use a specialized service designed to bypass Winston AI. Just remember, nothing is guaranteed in this cat-and-mouse game—both AI generators and AI detectors keep evolving.

If you would like more detailed stats (like precision/recall numbers versus a human + AI text set, or if you want the analysis notebook to rummage through), let me know in the comments. For now, Winston AI stands out when it comes to Gemini detection, thanks to its nearly perfect performance in my sample test.
